Residents near the Badger Fire decide to wait out the flames

Despite evacuation orders and warnings northwest of Yreka, at least some residents prefer to stay and protect their homes.

First we want to give an update on the largest fire in our region.

The badger fire is more than 450 acres.

It is burning in siskiyou county california, just north of yreka.

It's on the west side of i-5 in the humbug hawkinsville area.

There are evacuation orders are still in place for the community of hawkinsville.

A red cross shelter has been set up at the jackson street elementary school in yreka.

The fire is 15 percent contained.

She spoke with people who live in the hawkinsville area that have been living under the evacuation order since saturday night.

Tonight there are a few spot fes close to hawkinsville but its nothing like the firey red mountain we saw here a couple nights ago.

The american red cross says they have only found temporary housing for one family from the hawkinsville area -- many residents decided to stay put.

I spoke with one man today who says he plans to stay and fight to protect his and his son's home.

I can still see hot spots out there at night right now i stayed up the first night i had to watch it all night because ... it was still coming this way today firefighters have been focused on gaining containment.

So far, no hotspots have jumpedhe line that has been established.

Cal fire tells me they're hoping to ease evacuations this evening.
