Local Football Standouts Dealing with Disappointment of College Seasons Being Canceled

Hey good evening everyone..

Well although we're starting to see professional leagues like the m-l-b, n-b-a and n-h-l get back down to business, the timeline for the return of college sports isn't quite as clear..

Of course just last week, the horizon league announced it will hold off on competition until at least october 1st..

Others, like the ivy league and patriot league, have already canceled fall sports altogether..

And as our petar hood reports, those decisions are directly impacting a few former area football stars..

Narr: unfortunately trevin taylor won't be catching any touchdowns this fall..?nat pop- crowd cheers?trevin taylor: "i definitely wanted to get on the field.

That was my main goal."narr: the former homestead standout was setting himself up for a big sophomore season at harvard, but the covid-19 pandemic has put that on hold..taylor: "everybody was pretty upset, honestly.

We work all year for this one season, and now you just have to work another year for another season."narr: yeah, recently the ivy league became the first division one conference to cancel its 2020 football season.

The patriot league quickly followed suit, meaning warsaw grad andrew mevis' final go-round at fordham will have to wait..

Andrew mevis: "it was just really devastating, because it's my senior year, and a lot of guys on my team's senior year, so we had really high hopes and high determination that we were going to do well this year, and now we're going to have to find another time to do that and finish it out."

Narr: as for when that time will come, no one knows at this point.

Neither league has ruled out the possibility of playing in the spring, but neither has committed to the idea either, leaving both mevis and taylor in limbo as they continue to workout on their own..mevis: "as far as a team, i feel like we're just approaching it as not even a redshirt, just that we're going to play in the spring, because if that's what they're telling us, then that's what we have to train for, because we have to be ready at any moment."taylor: "instead of looking at the situation as dangit we're missing out on a season, just kind of look at it now as we have another season to prepare and show what we can do on the field now.

I guess just the team aspect of it is just make the most of the situation."narr: and that's exactly what these guys plan on doing.

And while it will be strange not suiting up come september, there is an understanding that these tough decisions were made with things much more important than pigskin in mind..taylor: "you've got to look at the bigger picture honestly, everybody's health and safety.

Everyone loves football, but we gotta do what we gotta do."
