Gov. Brown announces COVID-19 metrics for Oregon schools

New COVID-19 health and safety metrics will help guide school districts as they create plans for what learning will look like this fall.

That want to hold in person class... will now have to meet new guidelines, outlined by the state today.

The county they're in..

Could only have so many cases over a seven day period, for three straight weeks.

Based on the population numbers from 20-18... lane county could have no more than 38 cases.

Douglas would be maxed out at 12.

Coos county would be limited to 7.

Benton would be at 10.

And linn county would be no more than 13.

A lot of districts in our area --- including 4-j... springfield... and bethel --- already announced school plans for the fall.

Now those plans may have to be adjusted.

Kezi 9 news reporter kennedy dendy joins us live in the studio to break down the latest from the governor.

Kennedy?

Renee... these guidelines are strict.

In fact... at today's press conference... officials said only one county of 36 could actually open their buildings if school were starting tomorrow.

Here's a couple of things that need to happen.

At both the county and state level, the covid-19 positivity rate needs to be under five percent for three weeks.

And each county must have fewer than 10 cases per 100,000 people over a seven day span...also for three straight weeks.

But one important topic leaders did bring up today is about access for*all oregon students.

And ensuring there's a equal chance for everyone to thrive.

20:00 "equity has to be at the forefront of our decision making .we know our youngest children, students of color, low income students and students experiencing disability have faced the greatest challenges accessing a high quality education and in their learning and development."

Governor brown announced today that 28 million dollars will be given to public schools, as part of an emergency education relief fund.

And a focus will be on getting younger students back into the classroom& kindergarten through third grade and also those in rural communities with fewer than 100 students.

But there will need to be fewer than 30 cases per 100,000 over 7 days and covid-19 cannot be actively spreading in that school community.

We heard from the oregon education association, the largest teachers union in the state.

And they are in support what what announced today.

More details from the oregon department of education will be released mid- august.
