Community members push for a renaming of the Roseburg High's mascot

In 2016, Roseburg Public Schools made an agreement with the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians to keep the name.

Some people in the roseburg community are calling for a name change of the high school's team -- the indians.

There was a small demonstration today outside of the school where people held up signs demanding the mascot name be changed*immediately.

This comes after an agreement between the school and a neighboring tribe.

Some in the community say this name doesn't honor the region's native american history.

One demonstrator says as a white ally -- she feels the responsibility to stand up for those who are too afraid to.

We need to be able to represent them because they do not feel comfortable coming out here and doing what they feel proud to do and instead a bunch of people hiding in their homes.

The oregon department of education ruled 4 years ago that all public schools with native american base mascots had to change their names.

But... roseburg high and the cow creek tribe reached a deal that the name could stay.
