But first - new tonight - a recent study by the american academy of pediatrics shows that 97-thousand children over the course of two weeks in the u-s tested positive for coronavirus.

Action news now reporter esteban reynoso is live in chico, esteban what do parents have to say about this?

That 97,000 case increase accounts for a 40% increase in cases among children.

Parents i spoke with all wanted their children to be safe and healthy first and foremost, but with school just around the corner, this new data shows just how many children contract coronavirus throughout our area.

47 states were ranked in order by how many children aged 0-17 contracted coronavirus.

The average is 447 cases per 100,000, california sits in the middle of the pack just below 500.

Out of 3 counties in northern california - butte, shasta, and glenn - butte had the lowest percentage among children with almost 7 percent.

But glenn county just next door had the highest with more than 18%.

"until we can put a cap on this, i think it's important to take care of the health of our kids."

"safety first you know, safety first but you gotta give it a shot before you know what's true and what's not."

And when it comes to parents, they brought up the school year that is just around the corner.

Some say the risk is too high, and sending children to class is not worth it.

"i wouldn't promote or support them going back to school even though it's so necessary for their mental health and emotional health, but the risks and for the teachers, i think it's just too high."

Others think risks are everywhere, and school is no different.

"is that a little bit of a risk?

Is it okay to risk -- everything's a risk.

Me talking to you in the parking lot right now is a risk.

You know what i mean?"

Butte and glenn county are both on the state's watchlist which means future instruction will be only online, however, shasta county is not on the watchlist, which means students k-12 can return to the classroom.
