Latisha is a model citizen.

Ots image:left ag meets with family breonna taylor 1.jpg the family of breonna taylor... c1 3 day of school at danville christian academy..

Despite governor andy beshear's recommendation that in-person classes be delayed until late september,..

As abc 36's alex king explains... parents were both nervous and excited for their kids to start the new school year.

Alex:"students are officially back at school in person here at danville christian academy... but it doesn't look like your typical first day of school."

Jodi:"i think every parent would say this... that they would die for their child and i would mine."

Jodi holsclaw, mom of 4-year-old ava, a kindergartner at danville christian academy... felt what every parent has felt during the coronavirus pandemic... fear.

She says the school's staff helped her feel prepared in every way for the start of her daughter's school year.

Jodi:"i think it means to me the fact that i am so worrisome and i care about my child so much for me to send her off to school and break that connection we've had for four months, i think that says a lot about dca."

It helped that the school has taken steps to protect students.

Headmaster jim ward says the school has 215 students and the largest class only has 20 kids so there is space for social distancing.

Other precautions include... plxiglass where needed, a hand washing schedule for everyone, and eight hand sanitizing stations... jim:"when they come through in the morning there's a kiosk in there and they can actually look at the kiosk and the kiosk recognizes their face, they put their hand up it gives them a temperature check and it reminds them wear your mask.

So we've got two of those, they're portable, so we're going to move those between not only the main building but also the gymnasium."

Jerica shannon's 3- year-old son jackson is starting pre-k.

She says it has been a whirlwind of emotions but because of the safety steps, she feels confident sending jackson to school... jerica:"we do not fear it, we're not going to live in fear but definitely respect and there is a way to approach life every day with respect of the coronavirus."

Being small is an advantage...shannon says although starting in person works well for dca... it may not work well for larger schools.

Students at danville christian academy also still have the option of starting the school year online... reporting in danville, alex king, abc 36 news.

Also reopening as planned.... lexington catholic high school.

L3: abc 36 news white lexington catholic reopening to in-person classes first day is august 17 the school announced today it would reopen to in- person instruction on august 19.

Governor beshear has asked schools to hold off having in-person classes until september 28th.

A letter was sent to families saying the decision to reopen was made under the guidance of bishop john stowe, superintendent tom brown and in collaboration with other bishops in the state it also says everyone must wear face covering, practice social distance, and be willing to have their temperature taken.

With the new school year begining... either online, or in- person..

Across the country..

The coronavirus could push back to school spending to record levels... that's according the latest survey from the national retail federation.

-- in today's consumer watch... mandy gaither has some tips... to save you money while shopping for supplies for your child.

--reporter pkg-as follows-- whether it's back to the classroom -- or back home with a computer -- this school year will be like no other -- with all the uncertainty -- the national retail federation says parents with children in elementary through high school plan to spend nearly 790- dollars on average -- topping last year's record of expected spending.

But, there are ways to save -- first -- shop now -- back to school sales end the first week in september and buy extra supplies, says jenny martin of the southern savers website.

Jenny martin/"it's going to save you a lot come spring when nothing is on sale" martin says this time of year you'll find prices that beat black friday on things like printers and computers.

Some sites offer refurbished models -- which can save big bucks.

And don't forget those coupons.

Jenny martin/"target and staples are both offering 15% off coupons, when you register on their website as a teacher and it is available for homeschool parents" spend more for quality on some things like binders and bookbags -- some companies offer lifetime warranties -- don't shell out for your kid's favorite character -- you'll pay for that -- and know what your child needs for school -- jenny martin/"a chromebook versus a laptop, youre talking about a $300 difference, so don't just jumpoff trying to grab the best laptop that you can, really just focus on what they need."

For today's consumer watch, i'm mandy gaither.

Ots image:right voting during covid-19 mail in ballots.jpg the governor's office is c1 3 election.

But we can't see that plan yet...the secretary saying he wants the governor to look at it first.

He spoke with abc 36's christy bollinger...though... about one feature that won't be included.

L3: abc 36 news white general election negotiations underway frankfort l3: abc 36 news white michael adams secretary of state l3: abc 36 news white general election negotiations underway frankfort l3: abc 36 news white fran wagner president, ky league of women voters l3: abc 36 news white general election negotiations underway frankfort a bipartisan plan.

That's what secretary of state michael adams calls his proposal.

"a lot of thought has gone into it this is not just what i think we ought to do."

People across the country hailed kentucky's approach to the summer primary...especially absentee voting for all it's something the governor wants again... adams says...sure...we can have 800,000 vote absentee as in june...but not the 2 million or more expected in november.

"our system will crash we're not designed for that."

"what the law says is there is a very limited class of people that can vote absentee its usually 2% of voters thats the default."

Instead...adams says there will be more excuses allowed...so more people can stay safe at home and vote absentee based on age or health.

People also want more polling locations.

In june...the state's biggest counties only had one or two.

Adams says he's created an online portal to make easier...the always difficult task of recruiting the 15,000 poll workers needed.

Voting nat?

He knows he can't make everyone happy... but he thinks this'll satisfy about 80- percent.

The governor and the secretary had their first conversation wednesday, since adams submitted the prorposal not having seen the proposal yet, itself...the non- partisan league of women voters of kentucky says the election most open to all will include more time to vote.

"and then trying to expand the absentee but maybe not just making it wide open for everyone."

Eventually the group wants to see a full vote by mail system..

But knows it can't happen overnight.

The secretary says election plans could be announced this week...by law both he and the governor have to agree on the form the election will take.

### ots image:left less c1 3 kentucky derby next month.

L3: abc 36 sports white churchill reduces spectators for ky derby no general admission, infield will be ... the track announced today..

It is drastically reducing the number of people allowed in on derby day... to about.about 23- thousand.

General admission tickets will not be allowed...the infield will be closed... and it will be reserved seating only.

The derby usually has about 150- thousand fans at churchhill downs during the first saturday in may.

The date was moved this year... to the first saturday in september, because of the pandemic.

It's a foregone conclusion...the vast majority of college football players in the s-e-c want to play.

But it's just not that easy.

One word often popping up when talking about the pandemic and players competing is liability.

You may want to play now, but the "what if's surrounding playing are endless.

What if a player gets covid-19?

What are the long- term affects if you do get it?

What if a team has an outbreak...how do you proceed?

These are all serious questions and s-e-c commissioner greg sankey addressed liability concerns while on the dan patrick show.

Devin booker has c1 3 done it.

He dropped 35 points in a 130 to 117 win over the 76ers on tuesday.

He now has 91 30 point games with the suns...that's the most in franchise history.

He's only 23 by the way.

His suns now 7 and oh...the only team who's gone undefeated in the bubble.

For a spot in the 8th seed play-in game they first and foremost must win on thursday, but they also need the blazers and or the grizzlies to lose.

They don't exactly control their own destiny.

C1 3 booker talked about that after the game.

Big news out of augusta national on wednesday.

The 2020 masters will be held without spectators and guests.

The masters is set to tee of november 9th.

The chairman of the augusta national golf club saying the potential risk of having spectators and guests is just too much.

If you happen to be one of those lucky folks who has a ticket...gotta buy that just a tad in advance...your tickets will be honored for the masters in 2021.

Out at the top seed open in nicholasville.

One of the biggest matches of the day...16 year old coco gauf and second seeded aryna sabalenka.

The teen star gets the upset over sabalenka 2 sets to 1.

She moves on to the quarterfinals.

If you're wondering...the williams sisters will battle thursday for a spot in the quarterfinal .
