Access.wgbh.org good evening.

It is the number one priority for educators in our area: a safety plan for the school year.

For traditional face to face classrooms, administrators have a protocol to when or if an employee or student has a positive covid test.

Wcbi's bobby martinez spent the day in winston county and and joins us live in the studio with their plan.

So bobby, what does happen if there is a positive test?

Aundrea..

Immediate action will be taken... top administrators tell me it is important that they act fast... because the last thing they want is school wide outbreak..

Adapting to change... "this generatio has never experienced something like this.."

But with a positive mindset... "we hope that w can have a great school..

Kind of a school year like no other.."

Covid 19 has placed school districts in mississippi in uncharted territory..

The louisville municipal school district made the decision to push their start date for traditional and hybrid learning..

To august 20th due to the increase of positive cases and david luke, superintendent of louisville municipal school district... says letters will be sent to families once a student or faculty member tests positive..

Sot - david luke - louisville superintendent of schools "a person that ha tested positive or someone in the household has tested positive, we are going to notify that person with written documentation you know talking about their quarantine days and procedures and steps that they are supposed to take."

Now if there is just one positive case..

The school will still remain open..

But if its greater than three..

Sot - david luke - louisville superintendent of schools "so once you ge greater than three confirmed cases in a group that's when you go to look at the possibility quarantine the group."

Paul hayles, head of school at winston academy..

Says once a person tests positive..

They must immediately go into quarantine..

And from there..

Sot - paul hayles - head of school - winston academy "then what we hav to do is find out if it is a staff member, what people came into close contact, within 6 feet for 15 minutes.

We have to break that down, we narrow that down normally that drops the number way down to a minute number in comparison to what would have been."

Hayles says a majority of students have chosen the traditional way of learning..

But each day before stepping on campus..

They must answer a few questions..

"right here is on of our check-in stations our students report coming out of the parking lot in the mornings.

They come in and our coaches are standing here and they answer the questionnaire and they have their temperature taken and their hand is stamped and then they enter school.

Once again if anything on the questionnaire they answer yes to then they go home.

If their temperature is 100.4 then they will go home.

But we've been very fortunate in our days in return we have nobody with fever and no answers of yes at this time."

Both hayles and luke say they are taking it day by day..

And are relying on students, faculty and parents to work as one to get through these difficult times... students at golden triangle early college high school at emcc are back in class.

Some are attending on campus.

Other are learning from home.

Gtechs principal jill savely says more than half of the student population opted for virtual learning due to the coronavirus.

For families who are sending their children back, the school has taken precaution to keep students and staff safe.

' they've installed hand sanitizer stations throughout the hallways and only allowing one-way traffic between classes.

Savely says with the different learning options for students, staying connected throughout the semester is vital.

" teachers ar holding office hour each day so that students can login and meet with him one on one or in small groups to kind of follow up or take care things that they didn't quiteunderstand go back through information so i think communication is going to be huge.

" savely is expecting for more students to attend classes starting monday.

Mississippi's covid- 19 numbers are back down under 1,000 today.// the mississippi state department of health reports 6-hundred-and 12 new coronavirus cases and 22 deaths// the long term care facility outbreaks reported today went down to 178// so far, 69- thousand-986 mississippians have tested positive for the virus// several employees at the lowndes county sheriff's office are quarantined because of covid- 19.

Chief deputy brent swan did not disclose the number of employees affected, but confirmed that several people have tested positive for coronavirus and others are quarantined because of possible exposure.

Swan says no inmates at the jail have tested positive.

There is so much scientists and doctors don't know about covid19.

And, so much that is being learned everyday.

It is where blank spaces fall that continues to worry administrators at a college level.

This week the big ten and pac-12 postponed their football seasons.

The conferences have safety concerns because of covid-19... and a heart condition related to the virus called my-o- car-ditis our quentin smith speaks with a starkville man who recently received this diagnosis.

He joins us in the studio to tell us more about what this means.

Aundrea..

Espn reports my-o-car- ditis has been found in at least five big ten conference athletes... along with athletes in other conferences ... it's becoming a big concern in whether athletes should play this fall... i spoke with a starkville man battling this condition.... after the toll its taken on his body... he believes delaying the start of the season is the right thing to do... kicked back in his recliner watching television... this has become the new normal for decarlous hill... " i can't do an walking, can't do any lifting, i can't move anything around, nothing but picking up a remote to the tv and just relaxing myself."

This is his daily routine after he was diagnosed with myocarditis... a rare heart condition... "i was in shoc because all of my life whenever i go to the doctor, i've never had a heart problem, and being that i'm young and them saying my heart is only functioning at 25%, it was a shocker to me."

Myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle..

And is caused by a viral infection... such as covid-19... "after i overcam corona, i thought i was doing good.

I was going to work every day and doing what i need to do around the house, just a normal day, then july 22nd changed everything."

That's when he found out just what he was dealing with.

Hill says the aftereffects of the coronavirus have taken a toll on his body.

He now as to wear this life vest for three months until his heart is back functioning normally.

" if my heart goe lower than what it needs to be, if it's not functioning right, it'll shock me and lay me out, then we will have to get me rushed to the emergency room."

The condition is now raising concerns for athletic conferences after reports of some being diagnosed... the big ten and pac-12 have postponed their football seasons this fall ... a decision hill agrees with.

A decision he believes will save lives and bring more attention to this condition.

"it's real, i am living testimony it is real to the ones they do have it, continue doing whatever the doctors are having you do, and just take it a day at a time."

Along with being monitored with his life jacket.... hill is also on a low sodium... no salt diet to help treat this condition.

Within the next three months..

If his heart is back functioning normally again, which is in the 50 to 55 percent range..

He'll no longer have to wear his life vest.

The wildcats led by head coach tyrone shorter look to continue their dominance over the decades as they're on the hunt for the program's tenth state championship.

The wildcats return a group that can make that goal a reality.

Tradition.

That's what the louisville wildcats have emphasized this summer heading into the season.

Louisville has won a state championship each decade dating back to the 80's, and this year's team is determined to start 20 off with one as well.

"this senior clas has been working so hard.

We had 98% of our kids participate in summer workouts.

This senior class really wants to keep that tradition going to win a state championship in this new decade."

"we got to kee the tradition going and build the program back up.

Just be like the other programs. it's bigger than us.

We got to keep the winning tradition going like everyone knows.

Get that respect back like louisville had."

Despite an off- season that's been filled with uncertainty, head coach tyrone shorter is extremely confident in his team's chances of making that goal a reality.

"we feel goo going into this season with this group of kids.

We've been here.

This is our second year here.

I have the program exactly the way i want it.

The guys are responding to us the way we want them to respond so we feel really good about where we at right now."

"everyone know the plays.

Running hard.

Everyone is stronger and faster than last year so we're going to look pretty good."

"we're just goin to work.

Workout here.

We've been working since june 1st.

We're going to work to not feel that again."

Reason for the wildcats confidence is the talent they have on offense.

Despite losing last season's starting backfield and top two wide receivers, the team expects the offense to shine.

"we got some guy that's going to be more explosive in the backfield.

We have four running backs that i feel really good about.

We have a couple quarterbacks that we feel good about.

They gone be young and inexperienced.

Not going through the spring hurt us a little bit in that area, but we are pleased right now with out quarterback position."

"the defense i stacked.

They're gonna give us a lot of chances to put the ball in the playmakers hands and that's what we're going to try to do."

As the offense builds its chemistry, louisville has one of the top defenses in the state to rely on.

The heart and soul of that group d- line led by the highly touted ty cooper.

"our defense i going to have to carry us.

I feel like we have one of the best defenses in the state.

We definitely have the best defense in 4a so we feel real good about where we are."

"we take full prid about it.

We just work hard until we get recognized as the number one defense in the state" the wildcats kickoff the season with a home opener against columbus september 4th.

With louisville on the high school football tour, chris bolton wcbi sports.
