River overflows onto road after heavy rain in the Philippines

Worried residents watch as a river near their homes overflowed onto the road following a storm.

Emmanuel Flores was about to go to the market when the road leading outside of their street in Laguna, the Philippines was filled with flood water from the creek on Wednesday (August 19) afternoon.

Footage shows muddy water from the stream pouring onto the road next to houses.

Emmanuel said he and his neighbours were worried that they could be cut off from other towns if the flooding continues.

He said: "We are used to the floods here, but the flood from the creek is flowing fast.

This is the first time we've seen it." The flood caused heavy traffic because it flowed until it reached the main roads.

Officials said they are monitoring the river in case it overflows again.

A large part of the country including Metro Manila experienced heavy rains and flash floods this week due to the southwest monsoon.

Southeast Asia is currently going through its annual rainy season lasting from May until October.
