Tornado destroys dozens of homes in Indonesia

This is the terrifying moment a tornado ripped through dozens of homes in Indonesia.

The powerful storm smashed into homes in four villages in Pegasing District, Central Aceh Regency, on Tuesday afternoon (August 25).

Footage shows locals fleeing as the strong wind destroys the wooden properties, flinging debris into the air.

"A total of 30 buildings were damaged.

Fifteen of them were heavily damaged, 13 were moderately damaged, and two were slightly damaged," said Sunawardi, Chief Executive of the Aceh Regional Disaster Management Agency.

This extreme weather affected 32 people that had to be re-homed.

Officers and volunteers build temporary evacuation tents a few kilometers from the disaster area.

Sunawardi confirmed that no one was killed in this incident.

"There are four people who suffered minor injuries and have been handled by the medical team," he added.

''Everybody was able to take cover and avoid the full impact of the tornado.'' Indonesia and other countries in Southeast Asia, such as Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia, are currently at the peak of the annual monsoon rainy season with regular tropical storms.
