Sheffield mayoral runoff race will come down to provisional ballots

New information on municipal elections in sheffield!

We just learned the city clerks office took provisional ballots to the registars office today!

By next week - they'll know who will be in the run-off race for that mayoral race.

Waay 31's breken terry joins us live from sheffield.

She spoke with the city clerks office about how this race is coming down to single votes!

I'm just outside of the city clerks office here in sheffield.

2 candidates in the mayoral race are separated by 1 vote!

Now it comes down to provisional ballots.

They're the ones in question of elligibility - like if a persons liscense didn't match their current address.

It will be up to the county's registar's office to determine if any of these provisional ballots will count and for who.

David johnson secured his place in the mayoral run off election with a total of 620 votes.

But it's not clear who he'll be up against in the run-off.

Penny freeman had 429 votes.

Steve stanley had 430!

That means provisional ballots could be the decider.

I haven't seen that not here so.

Sheffield city clerk karen mathis said there are 28 provisional ballots that need to be checked and counted.

Mathis- it's close.

Very close we have some provisional that need to be counted so were waiting on that.

Mathis said they should have the results by next tuesday at the latest.

She said another oddity in this municpal election is that they didn't have any incumbets - meaning the whole city council and mayorship will change.

Mathis- it's like a family.

We've all been together for so long.

No matter what the tally is - both freeman and stanley have the right to demand a recount of the vote because it will be so close.

There will also be a run-off for the city council district two seat.

The run-off election will happen october 6th.
