(Part 2 of 2) Allie Martin tells us about the Hometown Heroes project in downtown Amory!

Banners honoring local heroes are appearing on light poles along amory's main street.

Wcbi's allie martin has more on the project that is gaing momentum.

The hometown heroes banner project honors veterans and it lets others know about the sacrifices made by locals who answered the call to serve.

Each banner features a photo of a military veteran, branch of the military and years served.

The "hometown heroes banner project is organized by the amory main street association, as a way to rember those who lived in amory during their military service.

The banners honor those who are currently on duty, veterans who are still living, or those who have passed away.

"we wanted a littl bit of positivity brought downtown and it's always something nice to see people who have served."

Each banner costs 160 dollars.

The banners are attached to light poles along amory's main street.

So far, sixteen banners have been purchased and one of those features a young pilot named george benedict.

"he was an amazin pilot, and he had a purple heart and other awards and recognitions that i had no idea about."

Dian wilemon is a volunteer with amory main street, who has banners in honor of her dad, a world war two veteran, along with her brother, who is retired, and her son, who is active duty.

She believes the hometowno banner project is an educational tool and a way to remember those who served.

"it makes my hear smile to see them as we pass, i know there are a couple of gentlemen that i known when i was growing up and they have flags on main street, we are excited to have more to come."

The homewown hero banners will be up through veterans's day.

They will also be displayed during other holidays such as memorial day and july fourth.

Nancy chen has more from new york.

Tom seaver helped lead the new york mets out of their early years as something of a punchline to become the ''miracle mets'' of 19-69, when they won the world series.

Just two years earlier, seaver, who had two nicknames -- ''tom terrific'' and ''the franchise'', was national league rookie of the year.

He pitched for the mets until 19-77, when he was traded to the cincinnati reds after a contract dispute.

He pitched a no- hitter in 19-78.

Seaver played his last major league games in 19-86, with the boston red sox.

That capped a two- decade career that landed him in the baseball hall of fame in 19-92.

Among seaver's achievements on the mound - pitching 61 shutouts.

Mets owner fred wilpon and his son jeff, the team's chief operating officer, said in a statement: "he was simply th greatest mets player of all-time and among the best to ever play the game."

The hall of fame said seaver died from complications of lewy body dementia and covid-19.

Tom seaver was 75.
