It's been six months since students were in the classroom.

Districts spending those months planning for this day.

A first day of school like no other!

Six months ago.... students walked out of their classrooms. some returned today.

Some will, instead, check in from a computer.

The holiday weekend was spent preparing for both options.

Buying masks and hand sanitizer.

Or logging on and testing programs. as we learned today... emotions vary.

Newschannel two's brent kearney reports on the learning curve as the 2020-2021 school year begins today in the mohawk valley.

Water bottles, masks, lunches, ok, notebook, smiles, alright just checking."

Andrea corderro making sure her kids carmen and xavier are ready for a first day of school unlike any other.

None andrea says: "we're excited, they're ready to get back to school.

Its been a while.

It has been a while.

How has that been for you as a parent.

It was challenging at times working and having them home.

But we did what we had to do the kids were great so."

Nats as students got off the bus, health screening cards in hand, staff was there waiting welcoming them back.

Brian says: "bussing went extremely well, our transportation supervisor had to create new routes based on the cohorts of students."

Inside, the school is set up much differt thanin mr mark the direction students should travel, and masks are required from the time they get off of the bus to when they sit down.

All apart of the school's original plan.

"all of the hours that we put in.

Reviewing guidance developing plans, it was all worth it.

When we saw those students get off of the buses, be greeted by their teachers, it was absolutely phenomenal."

As some students work in the classroom, the rest of their classmates are learning from home.

An adjustment for parents.

Rhianna says: "its been ok, because i can pretty much work from home anyways.

Before this all started so it kind of transitioned ok."

New york mills is also running on a hybrid learning model.

Superintendent joanne shelmidine their first day went smoothly as well.

"everybody came back smiles all around.

Our k-6 is here everyday and our secondary 7-12 is here hybrid.

I keep saying that the ul of the building h been gone sie march.o to see evyone back today smil and what nott just war my heart and as these students wrap up their first day, another group begins there's tomorrow morning.
