Watch: INS Viraat’s final journey to Gujarat, served Indian Navy for 29 years

Indian Navy's decommissioned aircraft carrier Viraat on Saturday set sail for the last time, on way to Alang in Gujarat, where it will be broken down and sold as scrap.

The aircraft carrier served the Indian Navy for 29 years before being decommissioned in March 2017.

It had served in the UK's Royal Navy as HMS Hermes and was named INS Viraat after being inducted in the Indian Navy in 1987.

There were attempts to convert 'Viraat' into a museum or a restaurant, but none of the plans fructified.

Under the Indian flag, Viraat played a crucial role in military operations such as Operation Jupiter, Operation Parakram and Operation Vijay.

Watch: India successfully test-fires land-attack version of BrahMos missile

India successfully test fired a land attack version of BrahMos supersonic missile. The supersonic cruise missile was test-fired on November 24 at Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It hit its target, which was on a different island with ‘pinpoint accuracy’. The strike range of BrahMos missile has now been enhanced to over 400 km. BrahMos Aerospace, an India-Russian joint venture, produces the lethal weapon that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or from land platforms. According to official sources, in the next few days, the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy are scheduled to carry out separate test-firing of the new version of the air-launched and naval versions of the supersonic cruise missile respectively. Watch: INS Viraat’s dismantling process begins in Gujarat’s Alang

The process of dismantling the world’s longest serving aircraft carrier INS Viraat has begun in Alang, Gujarat. INS Viraat was inducted into the Indian Air Force in 1987 and decommissioned in 2017. In July 2019, the Centre had informed Parliament of the decision to scrap INS Viraat. The decision was taken after the vessel could not be handed over to any state government because of lack of ‘self-sustaining financially complete’ proposal to preserve the vessel. This Centaur-class aircraft carrier of Indian Navy remained in service for three decades and holds the Guinness record for the world’s longest-serving warship. INS Viraat has served in several military operations like the Operation Jupiter, Operation Parakram and Operation Vijay. Capabilities of this mighty ship included maritime and land-based missions as well as engagements in anti-submarine warfare. Union Shipping Minister Mansukh Mandaviya bid final farewell to the aircraft carrier and said that around 40% of the global ships numbering about 280 are recycled annually at Alang.
