Yi -Martuwarra traditional owner Anthony McLarty says he fears for the future of the Fitzroy river over plans to extract large volumes of water.

'We have seen what happened to the Murray-Darling over a fight for water and there are serious concerns that the Fitzroy could suffer the same fate if plans for large-scale irrigation go ahead,' he says.

'The river is full of life.

It is a spiritual place for many, and it provides life for the birds, fish and kangaroos and other animals that live around the river, but that is all at risk if the river is pumped for irrigation.'
