The relay is raising money for cancer research.

The relay cut through greater lafayette today for dozens of miles.

News 18's joe paul was out in the elements to speak with runners and the event organizer.

He joins us to discuss what inspires them to keep moving.

It was a cold and wet morning.

But the great american relay went on as planned.

The leg that passed through greater lafayette began at dawn in brookston.

And weaved all the way through tippecanoe county.

< nat pop the rain couldn't stop tim glennon from running with a purpose.

"i lost my father to cancer, so it was very inspiring to come out and do a little run for him."

The great american relay passed thrgh greater lafayette on monday.

The relay is raising money for the american association for cancer research.

"everything was canceled that i signed up for this year, so i was very excited to do something live.

I did a lot of virtual ones, but it was fun to do this and actually see pele."

Glennon started with the baton at u.s. 52 in west lafayette and passed it off to another runner at harry's chocolate shop.

Vince varallo has been following the baton across the country.

"we started in boston on september 15th.

We started at the boston marathon finish line and ran the marathon backwards.

We finish on october 21st in los angeles at the santa monica pier, across the los angeles marathon finish line."

Varallo is the relay organizer and a member of boston buddies.

The group trains for the boston marathon every year.

"people are coming together, they're smiling again.

People are coming outdoors.

As a running community, we've just missed that sense of comradery.

Virtual runs are good but they're nothing like the real thing."

An american flag was michelle chutka's baton.

She started at dawn in brookston and finished at the klondike library in west lafayette.

"almost anyone can say that they know someone - a family member, a friend - who has had cancer impact their lives, so certainly this is a good reason to be part of this initiative, certainly something that's near and dear to my heart."

The baton still has a long way to go before it reaches california.

And runners are still needed to complete portions of the relay.
