Just closed out the highest monthly total of coronavirus cases it has had since the start of the pandemic.

Of the more than 28-hundred cases... the lexington- fayette county health department says almost half were university of kentucky students.

Now... the university... and the city are taking more steps to try and stop students from spreading the virus.

That's tonight's top story at five.

L3: top story white uk, city cracking down on large student gatherings patrols by lexington & uk police ... both the city and the university announced this afternoon that the lexington police department and the u-k police department will begin patrolling neighborhoods near campus for large student gatherings that may spread covid-19.

The patrols will begin tomorrow.

According to the city... u-k police will have the authority to break up any large group gatherings or parties.

The university says students can face penalties ranging from a warning all the way up to suspension or expulsion if they are caught.

The university also announced it has added a new covid-19 guideline for students.

- must report p ... the university says... effective immediately.... any student who gets a positive covid-19 test result through an off-campus testing site needs to report their results to the university.

Students have to provide documentation of the test.

If they don't have it... they still need to report a positive test result to the university.

U-k says this applies to students living both on and off campus, as long as they plan to be physically present on campus at any time throughout the semester.

Covid-19 cases source: lexington-fayette county health d ... according to the lexington-fayette county health department... there were 2,804 covid-19 cases in september.

Of the 8,597 overall cases.... the health department says 62 percent were reported in august and september there were also 17 deaths in september... bringing the total number of people who died from the virus in the county to 76.

That is the fifth highest one-day total since the start of the pandemic.

That brings the death toll now to 1,191.

The state is also reporting 910 new cases of the virus... bringing the overall total to 69,718 cases.

The state's positivity rate has also gone back up.

It is now at four- point-one-one
