Traumatic situations are part of the job for police officers but after time it could take a toll on their mental health.

News 10 spoke with Sgt.

Matt Ames with Indiana State Police about the importance of suicide prevention.

Police put their lives on the line for us everyday... but sometimes the burden of the job..

Can be too much news 10's jordan kudisch asked police "why" it's important to talk about.

She joins us live in our newsroom with the answer.

I spoke with sgt.

Matt ames with indiana state police.

He says he's proud to wear the uniform..

But underneath is a human who also feels the impacts from the job.

Suicide isn't an easy topic in general..

But ames says he believes there's a stigma when it comes to police.

He says quote "we're supposed to be leaders in the community..

And if you admit you have issues with your mental health it could be seen as weakness."

That's why he argues the need for this discussion.

He says no more officers need to die..

Thinking it's the answer to ending pain.

"because unfortunately were losing 120, 150 officers every year to suicide and that's just something that is not acceptable for that to happen because we are the leaders here in the community, we need to be reaching out."

In the next half hour ... the need for support groups and having this discussion.
