Amber Freeman heads to "The Big Barn" to check out some of their horses!

C1 3 you have a very special guest for us today and he is gorgeous.

Tell us about quinn.

Sydney- trainer: so this is quinn.

He is the one and only english shire in the big barn.

He was donated to us by ken knuth out in minnesota.

He stands at 18.1 hands tall and around 1800 pounds.

Amber-host: so he's a big guy.

Sydney- trainer: yeah.

Amber-host: just to put it mildly.

Amber-host: well, let's talk first about a lot of your horses.

They're all donated by people so that everybody here can come learn about the different breeds.

Is that something that helps people come in and see horses that they've never seen before in their lives?

Sydney- trainer: definitely.

So all of our barns are really cool in the fact that we have horses donated from all over the world, all over the country.

And it's honestly how we get so many of our rare breeds is by people donating them to us.

So we're very lucky to have the amazing donors that we do to showcase our horses to everybody.

Amber-host: absolutely.

And shire, that's a breed that people may have heard of before, but may not know so much about.

So tell us about them.

Sydney- trainer: so the shire is typically going to be the tallest breed of horse in the world.

Goes back and forth between the belgian and the shire a lot.

But typically, it's going to be that shire is going to be the tallest.

He's a little bit short for his breed, but he's still a big boy.

Amber-host: yeah, he's pretty big.

Sydney- trainer: and they often get him confused with the clydesdale as well.

Amber-host: that's what i was going to say.

Do you think it has a lot to do with they have that kind of same feathering on their feet, around their hooves?

Sydney- trainer: for sure.

He's definitely got that same hair, like that feather down there, and he just looks like a clydesdale and the clydes look like him a lot too.

Amber-host: well, are they similar in terms of what they do?

Sydney- trainer: yeah, so they are both considered draft horses.

So they're pulling horses is their main job.

So you'll see them do the same thing, sometimes mixed in together.

So it's not uncommon to get them mixed up.

Amber-host: they come from i'm guessing a colder region because of their hooves.

Sydney- trainer: yes.

Amber-host: and is that what they're bred for is to do farm work?

Sydney- trainer: they're bred for just farm work.

You'll see them a lot doing jousting tournaments today.

They are kind of your knight's horses back in the medieval times.

Amber-host: there we go.

So they have a little bit of a storied past.

So these are what we're seeing our knights in shining armor save the day on?

Sydney- trainer: of course, yes.

Amber-host: and does their temperament make them more apt for that?

Because you have to have a brave horse that's going to run right into battle.

Sydney- trainer: for sure.

So quinn here is a good example.

He is very calm, very level-headed, very smart boy.

Always thinking one step ahead of what's going on around him.

So it's very good for him.

Amber-host: and very typical of the shire?

Sydney- trainer: very typical.

Amber-host: well, he definitely has checked everything out our entire interview.

Very, very upset that we don't have treats i think.

Sydney- trainer: very true.

Amber-host: but we appreciate you so much for showing us quinn.

Sydney- trainer: of course.

Amber-host: and teaching us a little bit more about shires.

Where can we find out more about these guys?

Sydney- trainer: so quinn lives here in the big barn at the kentucky horse park.

We are open from 9:00 to 5:00, wednesday through sunday, and you can come on in and meet him and a bunch of our other big guys.

Amber-host: well, we appreciate you.

Thank you, sydney.

I think we'd better go get treats before we disappoint him.
