Vigo County high schools will have remote learning on Mondays

Starting Oct.

26, all Vigo County high schools will learn from home, precautionary measure will assist in contact tracing and quarantining weekend cases

Change more change is ahead for some vigo county students.

The "school district" is making a partial return to remote learning.

Good evening and thanks for joining us.

I'm rondrell moore.

Today, vigo county schools announced high school students will have "1" day of remote learning a week.

It comes as we're also learning the county is seeing increasing covid-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.

As a result ..

The health department says vigo county is on the verge of moving to the "red zone."

"red" represents "high positivity rates" and "high numbers of weekly cases."

The health department says if we "go red" ..

The county will have to take steps to limit the spread of covid-19.

This includes possible shutdowns.

At this point, health officials strongly recommend cancelling large events.

As we mentioned... the vigo county school corporation is making some changes to high school scheduling during this surge in numbers.

News 10's dominic miranda has the updated information for your family.

Starting on monday, october 26th... all vigo county high school students will have remote learning days on mondays.

This will continue for the forseeable future.

I spoke with communications director here at the school corporation bill riley.

He says this is a precautionary measure to assist in contact tracing and quarantining weekend cases.

Riley tells me this is simply a pre-emptive measure.

He says high school cases are extremely complicated.

That's because they have many classes..

And come into contact with different students and staff.

"we were concerned.

Will we be able to contact trace, at a time of elevated spread, those weekend cases to make sure that nobody comes into our building on monday that shouldn't be there."

Riley says...this decision simply gives the school corporation an extra day to make sure that no one is in school that shouldn't be.

"we want to be very precise in the way we react to covid-19.

This is really proactive.

It's not reactive.

We aren't experiencing problems yet.

This will give us a day to react to those weekend cases and make sure that we are effectively contact tracing and quarantining.

Riley says another big concern was lunch time...especially at north and south high schools.

Beginning on tuesday october 27th... those two schools can use their autotoriums in addition to their cafeterias for lunches.

This will allow for more social distancing between students at this crowded time of the day.

Riley told me all these changes are simply a precautionary measure to keep students in school...in person.
