Is under a mask mandate because of the high number of coronavirus cases.

But are people actually following the mandate?

Wtva alexis jones is live in tupelo with how the mayor feels about it.

I'm outside of tupelo city hall where the mayor shared why he thinks people can do better when it comes to wearing face masks.

"if we can get politics out of it and just listen to our doctors, i think we will be better off as a community."

Tupelo mayor jason shelton said at the beginning of the pandemic, city leaders and residents were proactive with staying safe.

Mayor shelton said since the president talked against face masks, it is now politicized.

He believes once people start listening to doctors instead of their political parties, cases will start to decline.

Sot: "our administration asks people to listen to our doctors.

We have a world class medical facility here in tupelo, north mississippi medical center.

They recommend that we wear masks."

Stand up: the mayor said law enforcement has issued citations to people for not following the mandate.

And said they have received calls about disturbances inside businesses.

Vo: shelton said if a person without a mask refuses to listen to an employee, he or she can be arrested if they cause a disturbance.

Sot: "it escalates beyond the mask wearing to more of a disturbing the peace."

Shelton is asking lee county residents to please follow the mask mandate .
