News 18's joe paul has been reporting on the behind-the-scenes production of the ceremony.

He joins us live to share how purdue is making it as close as possible to a real commencement.

I'm here at elliott hall of music.

Normally graduates would file in next month for purdue's winter commencement.

But purdue is producing an on- demand ceremony to give graduates the next best thing.

< nat pop purdue retiree mike piggott has read the names of graduates in more than 100 commencement ceremonies.

Nat pop commencement has recently gone virtual.

Which he says comes with pros and cons.

"fortunately, when you're recording them, if i make a mistake that i know of, we can fix it.

We call it fix it in post."

Tyler rogers is assistant technical coordinator at purdue.

Normally he would be gearing up for a big event at elliott hall of music.

"elliott is a big space, we have a lot of gear that goes into elliott, where here, it's just a couple of computers and a microphone."

College of pharmacy dean eric barker donned his full regalia to record his presentation of graduates for their degrees.

Nat pop "it may look like a lot of commitment and work on our part to do little things but i think it's the little things that make the whole process special."

Graduation and academic record manager stephanie (boz-graph) bosgraaf has helped put together thousands of commencement boxes.

Which include diploma covers, graduation programs and alumni license plate covers.

"we've gotten really good feedback on the boxes.

I think it's been a tough year for everybody and this is something small and special we can do for the graduates."

Purdue senior amber (fist-row) fystro says she plans to enjoy the on-demand ceremony from the comfort of her living room.

"while it is a bummer that i'm not going to be able to walk, i'll accept that fact.

I'm ok with it.

I think it's a good idea that's necessary."

The on-demand commencement video will be available to graduates beginning december 7th.

Purdue wants to make the on-demand commencement as realistic as possible.

They're encouraging students to wear graduation attire and have someone hand over their degree when their name is called.
