NHS staff 'shattered' as pandemic's grip takes hold

Shattered staff in one of England’s largest hospitals say they are working “tothe limit” of their ability, battling low morale, exhausting shift patterns,and the prospect that the worst is still to come.

As the number of cases anddeaths continues to rise across the country, frontline staff at St George’sHospital in Tooting, south-west London, have had to vastly expand intensivecare capacity and move under-qualified staff to high dependency roles in aneffort to combat soaring sickness.

The PA news agency was granted rare behind-the-scenes access to the coronavirus front line amid confirmation that afurther 1,041 people died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19, thehighest daily reported total since the first wave in April.
