We start with the breaking news we just mentioned.

A busy investigation is underway after a train hit and killed two people in athens.

Athens police have blocked off the area along mcclellan street..

A little northwest of athens state university.

Waay 31's olivia schueller was the first reporter on the scene and joins us live..

Olivia what have you learned?

Right now- this investigation is stretching into its third hour.

I can tell you emergency responders were called to this area just before two o'clock.

Let me show you some video of the heavy police presence..

Investigators have been here blocking roadways to the crash site.

Authorities tell me both fatalities occurred on the train tracks crossing over mclellan street.

I've talked to police, the coroner and city officials.

They are all trying to sort out the details of how two pedestrians came to be hit and killed by a train.

I'm making calls to learn the name of the train company and get a response from them.

I'll be working agressively here this evening to bring you updates as soon as new information can be released.
