High Dam Flows Make For Dangerous Waterways

Breken Terry spoke with the TVA about how large spills at this time of year can make for a treacherous situation.

Wilson dam is spilling 1.5 million gallons of water per second to help maintain flooding along the tennessee river.

Waay 31's breken terry spoke with tennessee valley authority about how these large spills this time of year can make for a trecherous situation.

These larege flows create a quick current and higher river levels and with those higher levels means more debris in the river like logs that might be just below the surface.

The tennessee valley authority said the most dangerous part are the areas around the dams. with more rain expected in the forecast tva officials said they'd be changing the flows to keep up which can make the river unpredictible.

Guinn- we really try and prepare the system as best we can to give ourselves as much time to respond to localized rainfall that comes in higher than what's forecasted.

Once we see where the rain actually falls, and we go into responding to it that's what helps us identify locations we can cut back or hold back or where we need to pick up and increase flows.

Look live tag: the river is expected to crest in a few days right now the river is at about 19 feet here in the shoals, that's minor floodstage.

There are flood warnings along the tennessee river in florence and other areas of north
