Police Accountability Bill signed into law by Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb

A bill aimed to increase police accountability has been officially signed into law by indiana governor eric holcomb.

The new law includes mandatory de-escalation training for officers... and bans on chokeholds in certain circumstances.

News 10's dominic miranda spoke with local law enforcement today.

He has reaction to the newly signed law.

He says the number one thing is transparency... and he believes this will help police officers better serve their communities.

Clarke says... the clay county sheriff's office already practices de-escalation training on a yearly basis.

This is to work on ways to prevent in-custody deaths and other situations that could result in harm.

The new law also includes misdemeanor penalties for officers who turn off their body cameras with intent to conceal.

Clarke says this is a step in the right direction "this is an opportunity to help protect ourselves as well as the community.

We use those for training opportunities, protection against civil litigation, and again criminal prosecution aspects."

Lastly..

The law also includes 70 million dollars to help the indiana law enforcement academy.

This will go toward upgrading the nearly 50 year old training facility.... and implement the changes made necessary by the bill.

Clarke says what he often times hears in law enforcement is the need to de-fund the police.

He says actually... more funding will mean more training to produce the desired result from all parties involved.

"we fund it, we make it available, we provide those opportunities for law enforcement just like we do our youth and education.

If we give them more tools and more resources, it's only going to make our profession better, make us better law enforcement, and work better for our community."

Domini} clark says everything they do is in an attempt to strengthen law enforcement's relationship with the community.

He believes this newly signed law will do just that.
