The vigo county school corporation is focusing on a school building project.

Today...officials say the project will improve high school facilities.

News 10's dominic mirnanda was at the press conference this afternoon.

He joins us outside the school corporation's central office..

He has more information on how the community is a big part of the direction the school district is going.

Vigo county school corporation superintendent rob haworth says... today is the beginning of a year-long community discussion about this potential project.

There is a lot of financial uncertainty right now... but addressing these needs is the top priority for the school district.

[take pkg incue: **bite** without question outcue: **bite** spend those dollars duration:1:19] pk} "without question, vcsc's high school facilities are in need of serious attention."

The school corporation got official approval for 13 point 5 million dollars of covid relief funding.

Haworth says more covid relief federal dollars could be on the way... or a possible infrastructur e bill from president biden.

However...construction costs have increased significantly in the past year.

All of these factors could impact this project.

But, dr. haworth says this is defintely a broad discussion.

"this discussion is also about the delivery of curriculum and instruction and what does that look like.

This discussion is also about economic impact to our community.

This discussion is also about property taxes and the pocket book impact that a building program would have."

With the current financial uncertainties of this potential project... there is even a possibility of no referendum in may of 20-22.

Dr. haworth says the school district is looking for feedback.

"i think the way forward for communities when we are speaking of school projects, when we are speaking of dollars that we werent expecting to be flowing in at the county level, the city level and the school level--how do we wisely work together to spend those dollars."

This project plans to include improvements to roofing...heating and cooling systems...coolers for cafeterias...and of course academic settings.

Dr. haworth says he's looking forward to hearing the community's hopes for this project.

The school district is hosting the first of several community discussions on the issue.

That will be at 6-30 thursday evening at lost creek elementary school.
