Survey reveals effects of pandemic on Eugene residents

This morning.

The pandemic has turned life upside down for many of us.

And thanks to a new survey by the city of eugene, we're learning more about how those in our community have been affected.

And i'm jaimie hays.

Later today, the eugene city council will meet to discuss and review the survey results.

Kezi 9 news reporter jacob roberts joins us live from downtown eugene.

Jacob, what exactly did this survey uncover?

More than 600 households responded to the questionare.

They were asked questions about a number of topics like what they're doing to stop the spread of the virus, how they've been impacted financially, and what needs they have.

Here's what we know.

98% of residents said they are wearing a mask to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Four out of 10 said they are experiencing emotional distress because of covid.

27% said they've taken a hit financially, because of a lost job or reduced hours.

One out of ten are having trouble paying rent or utilities or buying groceries.

There's also evidence that this pandemic has not affected everyone equally.

According to the survey, communities of color who primarily speak spanish reported higher rates of negative impacts.

Non-white people reported significantly higher financial needs or trouble paying for necessities.

The city council plans to discuss these findings during a work session this afternoon.

The council is also dealing with another challenge because of covid.
