The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, commonly referred to as the Punchbowl Cemetery, was established in Hawaii in 1949.
The first to be interred here were many unknown sailors who died during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
Also buried here was the Pulitzer Prize winner war correspondent Ernie Pyle.
