Wing Luke Museum Presents Sound Check! The Music We Make, a New Music Exhibit
*One-of-a-Kind Exhibit celebrates the influences, contributions of AANHPI Musicians.*
*SEATTLE, WA / ACCESSWIRE / September 25, 2023 / *The Wing Luke Museum presents Sound Check! The Music We Make, an exhibit, from Oct. 15, 2023 to Sept. 14, 2024. Sound Check! celebrates the significant contributions of AANHPI artists in music and is produced in partnership with KEXP-FM, the Music of Asian America Research Center, UTOPIA, and Smithsonian NMAH among others.
"Music connects us to our homelands and our ancestors and can be an entry point into the cultivation of new cultural identities," said Paul Kikuchi, contributing artist and a member of the Community Advisory Committee that helped develop the exhibit. "I hope that the exhibit, which features a broad range of performers in a diversity of musical genres, will give visitors a sense of how deeply AANHPI musicians have influenced and shaped the popular music canon."
Featured artists include Kim Thayil and Hiro Yamamoto of Soundgarden; singer songwriter Carly Ann Calbero; jazz drummer Akira Tana; musician Roger Rigor; hip hop artist Geo Quibuyen of Blue Scholars and many more. To learn more about the exhibit, visit the Wing Luke Museum exhibit page.
A special members-only Oct. 14 celebration features a talented lineup of local performers, and exciting activities such as live music, tasty food, special photo opportunities, and prizes at the Museum. Anyone interested in becoming a member and joining the party should register here.
The interactive exhibit has curated* *behind the scenes-photos, framed artworks, podcasts, artifacts, storylines, audio and video that feature AANHPI artists' expressions of cultural identity.
KEXP will also include a mock DJ booth installation, and behind the scenes stories from employees highlighting progress made toward inclusion and representation in the music industry.
"The excitement around this new exhibit is electric, because historically underrepresented AAPI artists are not the primary focus of music exhibits," said Joël Barraquiel Tan, Wing Luke Museum executive director. "We will highlight influential but lesser-known artists but also hear stories from brand names in the industry."
A must-see for music lovers, students of music history and those simply curious about the contributions of artists and influencers overlooked by the industry, Sound Check! invites attendees to explore AANHPI artists, and their experiences creating art.
