A US-Russian journalist, Alsu Kurmasheva, has been charged by Russia for failing to register as a "foreign agent." This move by Russian authorities has been criticized by rights groups as an escalation of their campaign against independent media. Kurmasheva is the second US reporter to be detained in Russia this year. If convicted, she could face up to five years in prison.
