Quakes rock southwestern Iceland as volcanic eruption looms

Icelandic authorities have declared a state of emergency after a series of powerful earthquakes in the southwestern Reykjanes peninsula, indicating the increased likelihood of a volcanic eruption. The Icelandic Met Office stated that an eruption could occur in the coming days. The village of Grindavik, located near the earthquake swarm, has evacuation plans in place. The Blue Lagoon and Svartsengi geothermal plant in the area have also taken precautions. Iceland has 33 active volcanic systems, the highest number in Europe.
