Taiwan opposition alliance collapses, Foxconn’s Terry Gou to quit race

The opposition parties in Taiwan, Kuomintang (KMT) and Taiwan People's Party (TPP), have launched separate bids for the presidency after the failure of alliance talks. KMT's candidate, Hou Yu-ih, named Jaw Shaw-kong as his vice presidential running mate, while TPP's candidate, Ko Wen-je, selected lawmaker Wu Hsin-ying. Terry Gou, the founder of Foxconn Technology Group, is expected to withdraw from the race. The breakdown in talks between the parties favors the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), whose nominee, Vice President Lai Ching-te, has been leading in polls.
