of the fall of the berlin wall and 28 years later a virginia couple says they remember their experiences in germany like it was yesterday, wdvms karlynn wells has more on their story. &lt;&lt;karlynn starting in 1945. east berlin was controlled by the soviet union and west berlin by the u.s and allies. in 1961 the concrete barrier known as the berlin wall went up to solidify the seperation. frank tilton "if you'd happen to been at the wrong place at the wrong time, you were pretty much stuck anf you stayed there." karlynn unless you were in the military, a politician or an athlete--- traveling from east to west in germany at that time was nearly impossible. josephine tilton and her family defeated the odds. josephine tilton "it was a matter of survival, he couldnt find another job and my mother couldnt find a job." karlynn and on this anniversary of the fall of the berlin wall josephine shares her story with lfcc students and reflects on how her family escaped communism and got past checkpoints, guards, and guns, to start a new life. josephine tilton "my dad took my two brothers and my mother took me because if they saw any family traveling together that was an indication that maybe they were on their way to berlin to escape." karlynn but she also reflects on the moment she saw the wall come down. josephine tilton "those people were on top of the wall not being killed they were going through the checkpoints streaming through west germany,and were so happy, i just couldnt believe what i saw." karlynn during this time her husband frank was stationed in west berlin, he says the things he saw there makes him grateful for his and his wifes freedom. frank tilton "we need sometimes we have to stop and realize what it really means to be an american and what we have that other people dont and did not have." karlynn the couple urged students to remember there are still families that have to flee their countries for safety. josephine tilton" i feel for these people i know what some of them go through, no food , no nothing.
