Hurricane Lala weakens to tropical storm near Hawaii

Hurricane Lala weakened to a tropical storm on Sunday after skirting Hawaii without making landfall, but it continued to bring hurricane-force gusts, drenching rain and power outages to the Big Island. One person died and more than 130,000 households lost power, with total rainfall reaching nearly three feet in some areas.
