Nepal-Tibet Border Floods Kill at Least 270, Over 800 Missing
A catastrophic flash flood along the Nepal–Tibet border has killed at least 270 people and left more than 800 others missing, according to the latest official estimates, as search-and-rescue operations continue across the Himalayan valley.
The deluge followed a glacial collapse, the U.S. Geological Survey said, sending a wall of water down a river valley shared by Nepal and Tibet and sweeping away entire villages, houses, roads and bridges.
The missing include foreign tourists, border officials, port workers and local residents; Nepali officials have said that nationals of India, the United States, Britain, Australia, Malaysia and Ukraine are among those unaccounted for.
Because the disaster is ongoing and rescue teams are still reaching cut-off areas, authorities warn that both the death toll and the number of missing are likely to rise; one latest tally put the missing at at least 1,500, while another counted more than 800.
