Trump rejects Iran ceasefire plan; Tehran denies new US talks

President Donald Trump has rejected Iran's latest proposal to end the conflict, dismissing a plan that would have reopened the Strait of Hormuz within seven days and resumed nuclear talks in exchange for the lifting of the United States' naval blockade of Iranian ports. "They made a proposal but I reject it," he told reporters, calling the offer "not acceptable" and declining to say whether he would restart military strikes after the midterm elections. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had said the strait could reopen and normal maritime traffic resume within seven days if the necessary conditions were met. After Trump's rebuff, Araghchi said a history of contradictory messaging from Washington meant the rejection might not be a final position. Separately, France is sending military support to Saudi Arabia for its war against Iranian-backed militants. Iran, meanwhile, denied it had any plans to negotiate with the United States. Iranian state media reported that Tehran's delegation to the U N General Assembly had no talks scheduled, a day after Trump said he expected negotiations to resume.

In the United Kingdom, counter-terrorism police arrested five men near R A F Fairford in Gloucestershire on suspicion of terrorism offences after three suspicious vehicles were seen approaching the base early on Sunday. Explosives were found on three vans parked minutes from the installation, which is being used by the U S Air Force for operations against Iran, and bomb disposal teams examined the vehicles. Police said all five suspects are British nationals from London in their 20s and that they had secured an extension to continue questioning them. Investigators are examining whether Iran was behind the suspected plot.

In entertainment news, Taylor Swift and Madonna were the big winners at the twenty twenty-six M T V Video Music Awards in downtown Los Angeles, with female artists dominating the ceremony. Swift won the night's top honour, extending her record as the most-awarded artist in V M A history, while Madonna collected three trophies. K-pop star Lisa and British newcomer Sienna Spiro also won. Madonna took the VMAs stage for the first time in more than two decades, opening her appearance with "It's mother."

In British politics, Chancellor John Healey is expected to use his Labour conference speech to promise a "new age of industrialisation" for the United Kingdom, including policies to boost British shipbuilding and new facilities to maintain nuclear submarines on the Clyde.

In U S-China diplomacy, David Perdue, the U S ambassador to China, said President Trump offered to sell arms to Xi Jinping during the Chinese leader's visit. The White House later said the United States had no plans for such a sale.

In sport, Republic of Ireland footballers chose not to engage in pre-match formalities with Israel and wore black armbands "in recognition of all lives lost in the Gaza conflict".
