Lula wins historic fourth term as Bolsonaro rejects result
Brazil’s leftist president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has won a historic fourth term after defeating far-right challenger Flávio Bolsonaro in a dramatic run-off, with official results showing 100% of votes counted. The 80-year-old incumbent, who had trailed Bolsonaro in the first round, declared the comeback a defeat for denialism.
Bolsonaro, a senator and son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, refused to concede and said he would seek to annul the vote. His stance followed an evening of chaos at some polling places after a last-minute decision to extend voting by two hours.
Lula’s victory bucks a recent regional trend of wins for right-of-centre candidates allied with Donald Trump and suggests Latin America’s largest economy will continue resisting United States tariff pressure.
Venezuelan opposition leader Machado returns from exile to Caracas
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado announced her return to Caracas on Sunday after nearly ten months in exile, writing on X, “I’m here. With you.” She left in late 2025 to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo and had since operated largely from the United States and Panama.
Thousands of supporters lined the streets of Caracas to greet her. Her return comes as doubts deepen over Venezuela’s democratic future and the role of the United States, following the reported U.S. military removal of Nicolás Maduro and installation of an interim government led by Delcy Rodríguez, who has exceeded the term she was authorised to serve and with no election scheduled.
Machado, a Nobel laureate, remains sidelined from negotiations over the country’s democratic transition, and her arrival is unlikely to please the interim leadership.
Serbia's Vucic concedes defeat to student-led opposition movement
Serbia’s longtime leader Aleksandar Vučić has conceded defeat to the opposition Student List in a snap parliamentary election, telling supporters, “It is clear that we have lost these elections.” The result ends more than a decade of political dominance by Vučić, who had been endorsed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and had denounced the student movement as a foreign-led attempt to unseat him.
Turnout was close to 70%, the highest since the break-up of Yugoslavia in 1992. The vote followed nearly two years of student-led protests triggered by the 2024 collapse of a train station canopy in Novi Sad that killed 16 people.
Supporters celebrated across the country, but the student movement’s yet-to-be-named leaders face a long list of governing challenges.

Judge Jesse Furman said Comey, an assistant U.S. attorney for a decade, was dismissed despite consistently stellar reviews and work on some of the country’s highest-profile cases.
Comey sued the Department of Justice over her abrupt termination, and the judge reinstated her.
