Hurricane Lowell skirts western Hawaii, cuts power

Hurricane Lowell passed just west of Hawaii late Monday, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain and large waves, the National Hurricane Center said. Tens of thousands of homes and businesses lost power. Hawaii had declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm, and hurricane warnings were posted for western Hawaii including Kauai County. Lowell approached as a Category 2 or major Category 3 storm.
