Pentagon firings and editorial independence dispute at Stars and Stripes
The Pentagon fired the editor, publisher and other journalists at Stars and Stripes, the independent U.S. military newspaper, in what the dismissed journalists describe as an effort to diminish the outlet's editorial independence. Three of the fired journalists sued the Pentagon, alleging violations of their First Amendment rights and asking a court to block their terminations. A federal judge declined to issue such a block, allowing the Defense Department to proceed for now with exerting greater editorial control over the publication.
