Berlin Police Shoot Dead Suspect in Pride Ramming Attack
On Saturday night, a man drove a van into a crowd near Berlin’s Pride festival close to the Brandenburg Gate, killing one person and injuring at least 16 others. German authorities identified the suspect as 21-year-old Abdul Ballout and said he had links to Islamist circles and was already known to police.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt named Ballout as the chief suspect and said there was a “strong suspicion” the assault was an act of terrorism. Police said the attacker was involved in local Islamic groups.
After a daylong manhunt, officers located Ballout on Sunday evening in the Spandau district of western Berlin, reportedly at an allotment. Police said he rushed at officers with a knife and was shot dead during the operation.
On Sunday, mourners laid flowers and candles at a memorial near the Brandenburg Gate while crews dismantled stages and cleaned up the festival site.
