Canada-U.S. trade talks collapse and tariffs take effect
Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada collapsed late on Friday, minutes before a midnight deadline, leaving a new 50% U.S. tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods to take effect early Saturday. Ottawa immediately vowed to retaliate with matching levies “dollar for dollar.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he ordered negotiators to suspend the talks to protect Canadian sovereignty, accusing Washington of making unfair last-minute changes to a proposed deal. In a Saturday morning address, he called President Donald Trump’s tariffs a “miscalculation” and said Canada had walked away from the table.
Carney acknowledged that the two sides had made important progress in recent weeks but said it had not been enough to meet Canada’s objectives. U.S. and Canadian tariffs are now in effect, deepening the trade dispute between the historic allies.
