Woman charged in alleged plot to bomb New York Capitol
US authorities have arrested and charged Jessica Bowie, 35, of Albany, with planning an Islamic State-inspired attack on the New York State Capitol in Albany. The Justice Department said Bowie allegedly intended to detonate an explosive device at the statehouse to kill lawmakers and then flee to IS-controlled territory in Syria.
The FBI used an undercover sting operation during its investigation, according to a criminal complaint. Prosecutors allege Bowie pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, expressed support for terrorism online and had converted to Islam before developing the plan. The charges remain allegations.
USS George Washington arrives to relieve carrier Abraham Lincoln
The aircraft carrier USS George Washington has arrived in the Middle East and is expected to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln after a record deployment of more than 250 days, US Central Command announced. The Lincoln, which has been deployed for roughly nine months largely in support of US operations against Iran, is heading home to San Diego with its 5,000 crew members.
The rotation comes amid reports from relatives of Lincoln sailors of deteriorating living conditions, including shortages and plumbing problems, low morale and several suicide attempts aboard the ship.
Prince Harry and co-claimants ordered to pay interim costs
Prince Harry and six other high-profile claimants, including Sir Elton John and Liz Hurley, have been ordered to pay an interim £9.54 million by 4 p.m. on 28 August toward the legal costs of Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Daily Mail. The order follows their defeat in a High Court privacy case over allegations of unlawful information gathering, which the company strongly denies.
A judge said the claimants could eventually be required to pay more than twice the interim sum, with the total additional liability potentially reaching around £25 million.
