Trump voices support for united Ireland during ongoing Irish visit

President Donald Trump is continuing a two-day visit to Ireland that mixes official talks with Irish leaders and attendance at the Irish Open at his golf club in Doonbeg. During the ongoing trip he has voiced support for Irish unification, saying he would “love” to see a united Ireland and that the change “may as well happen now.” On Sunday Trump brushed off British Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s opposition to a referendum on unification. “Everybody says that. Then things happen,” the U S president said. He added that “many people agree” with his view. The remarks amount to an unexpected intervention in Irish constitutional politics, but no referendum or agreement has been completed.

In sport, Germany’s Alexander Zverev won the twenty twenty-six U S Open men’s singles title, defeating American Ben Shelton six-three, seven-six (two), five-seven, six-two in the final. The victory gave Zverev his first U S Open crown and his second career Grand Slam, following his French Open triumph earlier this year. Shelton had been aiming to become the first Black man to win the men’s championship since Arthur Ashe in one thousand nine hundred and sixty-eight and the first American man to lift the title since Andy Roddick in two thousand and three. After dropping the first two sets, Shelton rallied to take the third before Zverev closed out the match in the fourth set.

In the United States, Republican Representative Tom Tiffany escaped a sinking light aircraft and swam to safety after the plane made an emergency landing on a Wisconsin lake late Saturday. Tiffany said he was returning from the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner when the aircraft lost power as it approached Wausau Downtown Airport. A mechanical issue forced the pilot to put the plane down on the lake. Tiffany and the pilot climbed onto the sinking aircraft, called nine hundred and eleven from on top of the plane and then swam to shallow water.

Also in the United States, a trespasser was stopped at the Malibu, California home of former Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday night, according to law enforcement officials and a spokesperson for Harris. Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, were not at the property at the time. Deputies responded to the incident and no arrests were made.
