Coronavirus: The Canceled Events in Tech, Media, Politics and Entertainment (Updating)

Updated Monday, March 30 at 6:30 a.m. PT with the new dates for the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.  

Worries about the growing coronavirus pandemic, which has so far infected more than 7,000 people in the United States and killed at least 97, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have dramatically upended what was originally going to be a busy schedule of entertainment, sports and cultural events into a virtually empty slate in the first half of 2020.

The entertainment industry has come to a literal standstill as coronavirus has halted production on television and movie sets. Theaters have closed indefinitely, leading studios to push back release dates or go the direct-to-consumer route. Bans on large public gatherings have shut down Broadway and concerts, though artists have begun performing their works online. South by Southwest was canceled, while Coachella has been pushed back to the fall.

The business side has been affected as well, with the TV networks pulling their spring upfront presentations. CinemaCon and Cannes Lions are examples of other major industry events that have been canceled or postponed.

The virus has physically affected Hollywood — Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson announced March 11 they tested positive for the virus while on location in Bondi Beach, Australia. Actor Idris Elba also tested positive for the virus after reportedly showing no symptoms.

Sports has taken a major hit — the National Basketball Association suspended the rest of the current season for at least 30 days after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive. Since then, Kevin Durant and three other New Jersey Nets players have tested positive. Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League and Major League Soccer also put their seasons on hold indefinitely. The World Surf League canceled all its March events.

The Electronic Software Association canceled the 2020 E3 video game trade convention, originally scheduled for June in Los Angeles; the organization may hold online versions of announcement events, a spokesperson told TheWrap. The annual Games Developer Conference was also canceled.
