The Unimog in winter - fighting snow

AutoMotions

When the snowstorm is so bad that you don't want to put your nose outside - then it's Unimog weather. Equipped with a snowplough and a gritter, it's in its element and it clears snow from roads and access routes – just like here in Rottach-Egern on the Tegernsee. That is where Tobias Maurer is deputy manager of the works depot, and he swears by his U 427 – even in difficult conditions: "The roadways here have gradients of up to 85 percent. But those are the conditions where the Unimog really feels at home." The municipal works depot of Rottach-Egern operates not only on flat roads and paths around the lake, but also on the access routes to the ski lifts of the nearby Wallberg mountain. Equipped with snow chains, nothing can stop the forward thrust of the Unimog and it clears snow at a height of 1000 metres. And when the winter is over, the work for the Unimog carries on. It transports gravel to forest tracks, tows a trailer with a building machine to a construction site, or it helps with road construction – just as a true "universal motor machine" should.

There is a tendency to think that winter tires are specifically designed for driving in extreme snow conditions, however, they really are tires for driving in cold conditions. Its performance is better than that of summer tires on any surface with temperatures below 7ºC, temperatures that we easily find in peninsular winters.

The signature double-arch grille is complemented by a stunning, origami-inspired mesh pattern that delivers visual depth and showcases modern Japanese-inspired artistry. Flanked by standard LED headlights that mimic the human eye, the QX55 announces its arrival in style. Along the body sides, the QX55's alluring profile has plenty to say but doesn't speak out of turn. The elegant and flowing lines reach from the hood, over the front fenders, across the doors, and over the rear wheels. Twenty-inch wheels are standard on all QX55 models, which fill the wheel arches and assert the SUV's dynamic presence. The rear of the QX55 accentuates the subtlety of the automaker's design and interpretation of Japanese minimalism by coupling an uncluttered liftgate with handsome, understated technology to deliver a lasting impression. Digital "piano key" taillights combine 45 separate LEDs in a single housing to create an elegant light signature, recently featured on the stunning QX60 Monograph design study. The INFINITI logo on the tailgate is similarly advanced and houses the power liftgate release, which further frees the rear end from clutter.

The designer remembers: “In October 1991 – I was responsible at the time for advance development in the Design department – I visited the Tokyo Motor Show. Audi presented the Avus Quattro concept car there. At the end of 1991, series development of the Boxster and the 996 was already taking place in other areas, and we decided to build a show car. I had full freedom as regards design. All drafts were produced as 2D drawings. So, not on a screen like today.
