Tropical Storm Bertha makes landfall in Louisiana

Tropical Storm Bertha made landfall in St Bernard parish, southeast of New Orleans, Louisiana, on Wednesday afternoon with 45mph winds, the US National Hurricane Center said. Earlier reports warned of storm surges up to 4ft along parts of Louisiana and Mississippi, heavy rain, localized flooding and possible tornadoes. CBS reported winds reached 59mph and rough surf hit Panama City Beach, Florida. NPR said damage appeared limited, partly due to the El Niño weather pattern, but noted warm Atlantic waters still carry a high risk of destructive storms. Separate flooding in Kentucky and West Virginia involved rescues.
