Former German Spy Chief Arrested in Espionage Case

August Hanning, former head of Germany's foreign intelligence service, was arrested on suspicion of passing state secrets to a foreign intelligence service. Federal prosecutors said his former chief of staff was also detained on suspicion of aiding and abetting attempted treason. The arrests were reported on 6 October 2026.
