Rochester Salvation Army in need of donations for Day Center

The Salvation Army says things have been going well so far, but they are in need of plastic water bottles.

Funding to the postal new on daybreak... the rochester salvation army transformed into the day center for the homeless a couple weeks ago and we're learning they're going through their donations quickly.

Kimt news 3's madelyne watkins joins us live this morning to tell us what the shelter is in desperate need of right now.

Brooke and tyler.

The salvation army here is serving up to 90 people during the day and the thing they give out the most is plastic water bottles.

In fact they give out over 100 of these everyday.

The salvation army has always been a place for people to go to for a shower, a change of clothes, some food or even just to hang out.

But with the library being closed and the other usual resources not available because of the pandemic ... the day center was created to make up for that.

Major lisa mueller, tells me the shelter switched over to one of their bigger buildings that wasn't in use in order to house everyone for at least 90 days ?

"*?

"* that' what they agreed on with the city.

While the salvation army is preparing for evictions to start happening again... the rental assistance they provide is helping in the "on any given hour if you look in there, you will only see 10 or 12 people who really need to stay there.

I'm telling you, people are getting housed at a rate i don't know this community has ever seen before.

So that's a good thing, that's creating some urgency.

Just having all your needs met in one space, we're getting really good feedback."

If you donate any items here to the salvation army... the items get quarantined for a few days to rid off any germs before being placed on the shelves.

Live in rochester.
