Rescuers today (April 20) hauled a rare tapir from a pond in the Indonesian city of Pekanbaru.

It's unclear how the large herbivorous mammal became stuck but footage showed the creature struggling to climb the steep sides of the pond.

A rescuer managed to dart the hefty forest animal and move it into a crate.

The tapir was due to be released in its natural habitat.

Tapirs inhabit jungle and forest regions of South America, Central America, and Southeastern Asia.

Their closest relatives include horses, donkeys, zebras and rhinoceroses.
