The Bombers were rightfully red-hot favourites, smashing Carlton by 76 points in their round 16 meeting. Surprisingly, Carlton were more than competitive. But with Essendon 17 points up in the final term, a grand final berth seemed certain. That was when Anthony Koutoufides began to engrave his name in football folklore. ‘Kouta’ had ten kicks, six marks and two goals in the last quarter, leading the Blues to an unlikely one-point win.
